Sketchbook indoctrination page

I just recently finished up another sketchbook volume and picked up a new one at the art store. Here's what I doodled onto the first page as a way to get it started. Just a little cartoon avatar all ready to willing to start filling up the clean empty pages with more cartoony madness. Pencils awaaaaayyyyy!

Balloon Man short story page 5, the big finish

( Balloon Man, page 5 of 5 )

This is the last page from the short story 'Balloon Man' out of the comic book I'm currently working on. A little creepy? A little weird? Yeah, I guess so. Sort of a kids version of a horror story maybe. I don't know how to explain where this came from really, it's just a thought that occurred to me and I put pen to paper and here you go.

This is the first comics story that I've fully colored. I'm not a huge of fan of coloring my work, but I understand people like the look of colored comics so I'm dipping my toe into the color comics world with my next book. And what's more colorful than a big bunch of balloons, really.

In case you missed them here are the previous pages from the story:

Ballon Man page 1
Ballon Man page 2
Ballon Man page 3
Ballon Man page 4
Ballon Man page 5

More stories and pages from the book I'm currently working on to posted in the coming weeks. Thanks for reading!

Balloon Man short story page 4, the big creep out!

( Balloon Man, page 4 of 5 )

This is page 4 of my comics short story 'Balloon Man'. The plot thickens. Did our hapless hero have reason to fear the bouncing color bubbles after all? Did he trigger some unseen plot put into motion by the suspicious looking balloon man? Is our luckless dupe now doomed to a cursed existence as the very object he most despised? Are you indeed reading these lines and hearing Ted Knight's announcer voice from Super Friends in your head as you do? I would say tune in tomorrow to find out, but you know as well as I do that the answer to all these questions is obviously 'YES'!

But, tune in tomorrow anyway for the thrilling full page ending. Admit it, you need closure.

Balloon man short story page 3

( Balloon Man, page 3 of 5 )

This is the third page of my short story 'Balloon Man' soon to be in the pages of my next comic book. I may have gone a little overboard on that second panel there, but the cartoony fun of drawing crazy just took hold of me. I've been going for illustrating an extreme range of emotion for this character in this piece over all and that added to it I hope.

STRIPPED: The Comics Documentary

I found out about this through a link on Facebook and was immediately excited about the film. They are currently trying to fund the final production through Kiackstarter, so please help out and donate if you can. I really want to see this get completed, it looks amazing.

Page two of my short story 'Balloon Man'

( Balloon Man, page 2 of 5 )

Here is the second page from my short story 'Balloon Man'. I was really happy with how that second panel turned out. I was worried it would seem to crowded to tell what was going on once I added the word balloons, but I think it looks pretty good.

More pages to come...

First page of my short story 'Balloon Man'

( Balloon Man, page 1 of 5 )

This is the first page from my short story 'Balloon Man'. This is one of the shorts out of my upcoming new comic book, 'Slap Happy Comix!'. I finished the coloring and text balloons this weekend for the first few pages. I'll post more pages throughout the week as I get them completed.

This is the first time I will be putting out a comic book with full color. So far I've found the process pretty tedious and I hate it, but it's getting slightly easier the more I do it. Personally, I love black and white comics, but I understand people tend to gravitate more towards color. At the last couple of shows I exhibited at I had some full color prints at my table for the first time and I saw right away the huge difference it made to have offerings in color. I had more attention, more traffic and more sales because of it. So, from here on out I am shooting for full color in my comics. Getting better at it is just a matter of practice, I'm sure.

Cartoony alligator sketch done while eating out

I'm not sure where the inspiration came from for this little doodle out of my sketchbook, but I was eating at a place called Gator's at the time. Perhaps that had something to do with it? Hmm...

Updated the Sexy Fish character sketch

The inside joke around my office, 'Sexy Fish', sketch I did earlier this week went over pretty well with my co-workers, but looking back on it I felt like I could push it a bit more. So, here I took another stab at the character design. I think this one looks more sexy-ish. Later I'll finish this off into a colored illustration.

Cartoon post-it notes holding my milestone pins

At the office where I work they have a tradition of issuing these little winged pins for reaching certain employment milestones. I got the first when I completed the initial trial period and became a full time employee. I just recently got my second one, the gold five year pin, for having passed my 5th anniversary with the company. I have them pinned into the cloth wall of my cubicle with a little post-it note illustration to show them off. Here's what that looks like.

The office white board and a sexy fish

On this blog I may be a cartoonist, but in real life I earn a paycheck by working as a software engineer in the technology department of a large company. As such I spend most of my days in a large cubicle farm.

There's a large white board outside the cubicle wall and, me being me, I like to draw cartoons all over it often. I have noticed that my coworkers would often erase the dialog I would include with their own inside jokes and references, so now when I draw on the board I usually include two characters talking and leave the word balloons blank for folks to add their own phrases, just for some fun around the office.

I recently came back from a week long vacation and found this exchange posted onto my last white board cartoon. Having been away I clearly missed out on whatever inside joke these two phrases were referencing and I had no idea what this meant. Even though it didn't make sense to me I still thought what they wrote was hysterical. Maybe it's funnier because I don't know it. It's a great non-sequitur phrase exchange whatever it means.

In case you can't read it in the image it says:

"It's a technological soap opera."

"Featuring a sexy fish."

Take from that what you will, but it made me laugh out loud when I read it.

Of course, the term "sexy fish" brought some interesting imagery to mind, so I had to doodle it out into my sketchbook during a meeting.

Inked panel from my upcoming comic book

This is a panel I recently inked that's part of a short story in my upcoming new comic book. Once I have the whole story completed I'll post the finished story here, but for now here's a little taste. Here my hapless hero remembers a traumatic balloon induced memory from childhood.

New cartoon illustration, Let's Get Paintin'!

This is a recent illustration I did just as a portfolio piece. I did this after a recent trip to Macaroni Grill with my wife and son. I love that restaurant for more reasons than just the food. They always use large sheets of newsprint as the table cloth and provide crayons. I usually spend my whole time there drawing with my son. These are some characters we came up during dinner and I thought they'd make a fun illustration.

This is my next comic book in mid production

This is a shot of my next comic book, Slap Happy Comix, currently in production at Bramble Vine Comics Studios (aka, my kitchen table). Currently all the pages are pencilled and I have started in on inking the book. It'll be a collection of various short stories, some single page others longer, all silly and weird and cartoony. Stay tuned for some of the completed pages as they get scanned and colored.

This is what I've been up to all summer and I'm looking forward to having the thing completed soon!
